"Estético" is not the same as "cirujano plástico"
In Colombia, the term "estético" (aesthetic doctor) can refer to providers with cosmetic medicine training that is significantly shorter and less rigorous than the 4–5 year plastic surgery residency SCCP certification requires. Some perform procedures that, in a fully regulated system, would be reserved for certified plastic surgeons. This gap has been a long-standing regulatory concern in Colombia's aesthetic industry — Draft Law 311/Senate Bill 237, currently pending, would tighten this. Until it passes, verification is on the patient.
A simple test
Ask directly: "Are you SCCP-certified, and can you provide your RETHUS registration number?" A genuinely certified surgeon answers this immediately and specifically. Deflection, a switch to talking about experience or results instead, or an answer that doesn't include an actual registration number, are all worth treating as a pause point — not necessarily a dealbreaker, but a reason to verify independently before proceeding.
