Every clinic website features curated testimonials — that's normal marketing, not necessarily dishonest, but it's also not the full picture. Here's where patients report finding more independent perspective before booking.
Where to look
- RealSelf. A platform specifically built around patient-submitted reviews and photos for cosmetic procedures, including international destinations. Reviews include both positive and negative experiences, and many include real patient photos rather than only clinic-selected before/afters.
- Reddit threads in r/PlasticSurgery, r/Colombia, and r/Medellin. These are unfiltered by definition — useful for raw, specific patient language and real quote comparisons, though individual posts are anecdotes, not verified data. Look for patterns across multiple threads rather than treating any single post as definitive.
- ASPS and ISAPS surgeon directories, if your surgeon holds additional international credentials beyond SCCP — these are independent professional bodies with their own verification standards.
What to be cautious about
- Google reviews specifically for medical providers can be manipulated more easily than platforms with stronger identity verification — weigh them as one input, not a primary source.
- Any review platform where the clinic controls what gets published — if a testimonial only exists on the clinic's own site, treat it as marketing content, not independent review.
- Private Facebook groups can have valuable, candid discussion but are harder to verify and search — useful once you're in one, but not something you can research from outside.
Reviews and verification are two different steps
Independent reviews give you a sense of patient experience and satisfaction. They don't replace directly verifying SCCP certification and RETHUS registration — see our verification guide. Do both; neither one alone is a complete picture.
A practical research approach
Search the surgeon's full name alongside the platform name specifically (for example, "[surgeon name] RealSelf" or "[surgeon name] reddit") rather than only checking their own website and Instagram. If a surgeon has a meaningful patient volume, independent mentions should exist somewhere — their complete absence across every independent platform is itself worth noting.
