Paying for surgery in a different country involves a few more steps than a domestic medical bill. Here's how international patients typically handle payment for procedures in Colombia.
Typical payment structure
- Deposit to book your surgery date, usually a percentage of the total, paid in advance to secure your slot.
- Remaining balance typically due before or on the day of surgery, not after.
- Common payment methods: wire transfer is the most common for the full or majority balance; some clinics accept credit cards for a portion, often with a processing fee added; cash in USD or COP is accepted by some clinics for final balances, though carrying large amounts of cash has its own risks.
Financing options
Financing specifically for medical tourism to Colombia is less standardized than domestic US medical financing. Options patients report using:
- US-based medical financing companies (such as CareCredit-style lenders) that don't require the provider to be in-network, since you're paying the lender directly and using the funds independently.
- Personal loans or lines of credit arranged independently before travel.
- Payment plans directly with the clinic, offered by some but not all providers — ask directly rather than assuming it's available.
Be cautious with large upfront wires to unverified clinics
Wire transfers are difficult to reverse. Before sending a significant deposit or full balance, confirm the clinic and surgeon's SCCP certification independently (see our verification guide), and if possible, verify the receiving account name matches the clinic's actual legal or trading name.
Currency considerations
Quotes are sometimes given in USD, sometimes in Colombian pesos (COP) — ask which currency you're being quoted in and lock in the exchange rate assumption in writing if there's a gap between your quote date and your surgery date, since COP/USD movement can shift the effective price.
