To earn SCCP membership, a surgeon must complete a full medical degree (typically 6–7 years in Colombia), followed by a 4–5 year specialized residency in plastic, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgery at an accredited university program. JCI (Joint Commission International) is the global gold standard for hospital accreditation, recognized by US insurance companies and international health systems. Six Colombian hospitals currently hold JCI accreditation. If your surgeon operates at a JCI-accredited facility, the operating rooms, sterilization protocols, emergency response systems, and patient safety practices meet the same standards as top US hospitals.

ICONTEC (Instituto Colombiano de Normas Técnicas y Certificación) is Colombia's national quality certification body. Many excellent clinics that are not JCI-accredited (because JCI accreditation is extremely costly and typically reserved for large hospital systems) hold ICONTEC certification instead. This is still a meaningful quality signal — it confirms the facility meets Colombian national healthcare standards.

No SCCP verification. If a surgeon cannot be found in the SCCP directory, they are not a board-certified plastic surgeon in Colombia — regardless of what their website or social media claims.

Pricing that seems too good to be true. If a surgeon is quoting 50%+ below the typical Colombia range, investigate why. Extreme discounts often mean an inexperienced surgeon, a non-accredited facility, or shortcuts in anesthesia and post-op care.
