"Recovery house" is a term specific to Colombia's medical tourism industry, and if you're new to researching surgery here, it's worth understanding clearly before you start pricing anything — it's frequently the single largest cost patients didn't originally budget for.
What a recovery house actually is
A recovery house (casa de recuperación) is a dedicated facility — sometimes a converted home, sometimes purpose-built — where international surgery patients stay for the days immediately following their procedure. Unlike a hotel, recovery houses are staffed specifically for post-surgical care: nursing check-ins, lymphatic drainage massage, meal service adapted to recovery needs, and specialized furniture (like donut cushions and recliners positioned for procedures where sitting normally isn't allowed yet).
Who actually needs one
- BBL and body-contouring patients, almost universally. After a BBL specifically, you typically can't sit directly on your buttocks for 2–3 weeks to protect the fat graft — recovery houses have furniture built around this restriction. A regular hotel room isn't set up for it.
- Tummy tuck and mommy makeover patients, given the longer, more restricted recovery and the value of on-site nursing support.
- Anyone traveling alone, regardless of procedure, since a recovery house provides supervision a solo hotel stay doesn't.
- Less commonly needed for rhinoplasty, breast augmentation alone, or gynecomastia — these have shorter, less physically restrictive recoveries where a hotel or Airbnb with a companion is often sufficient.
